The IRS came today to warn taxpayers against a new telephone scam. This scam is targeting students and parents, demanding payments for a “Federal Student Tax” (which does not exist)!
The IRS will NEVER:
- Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method;
- Threaten to call in the local police;
- Verify tax information over the phone;
- Ask for credit card numbers over the phone.
Do NOT give out any information; hang up the phone immediate. You can also call TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) to report the call at (800) 366-4484.
